RAVE-O ELL
English Language Learners Program Based on RAVE-O

Overview

RAVE-O is a unique approach to teaching children to read with twin foci on an expanded view of the foundational skills (POSSUM approach) and on deep reading processes like critical thinking. This structured, multi-component approach teaches learners how the English language works. Because the multiple emphases on connecting oral and written language skills are extremely important for ELL and multi-lingual learners, we are piloting the RAVE-O ELL program for select schools and districts. RAVE-O embodies research on the reading brain through an expanded understanding of foundational skills, fluency, and deep-reading comprehension (see details under RAVE-O).

RAVE-O® is a small-group, evidence-based literacy intervention curriculum for students in grades 2–4, which empowers them to read text deeply to build new knowledge, develop new ideas, and reach new levels of reading achievement.

While RAVE-O has decades of gold standard evidence, we are in the process of collecting data on the ELL program. We are seeking partner sites for this work today!

Connecting the Parts

RAVE-O is the only program to simultaneously integrate phonology, orthography, semantics, syntax, understanding the alphabetic principle, and morphology with the same corpus of words.

Fluent Comprehension

This integration leads to fluent comprehension, particularly deep reading processes like inference, empathy and critical analysis. This is particularly important for ELL classes.

Multisensory Activities

RAVE-O includes multisensory activities like art and poetry

that emphasize the strengths of neurodivergent learners.
