Reading gains across fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary

What is RAVE-O

A program built on the components of the reading brain.

Most reading interventions treat phonics, vocabulary, and fluency as separate tracks. RAVE-O integrates all six components with the same Core Words in every lesson.

Multi-componential by design

Six reading processes — phonology, orthography, semantics, syntax, the alphabetic principle, and morphology — woven into every 30-minute lesson.

Scripted, structured, and teacher-friendly

Fully scripted lesson guides mean teachers spend their energy on students, not on planning. Slide decks, student workbooks, and decodable readers are all included.

Core Words that go deep

Each unit is built around carefully chosen Core Words with many meanings. The more a child knows about a word, the faster and deeper it’s read.

From decoding to comprehension

RAVE-O doesn’t stop at phonics. Minute Stories and chapter books build inference, fluency, and a love of reading alongside the technical skills.

Diagram of the POSSUM model showing the word "bat" at the center surrounded by its six components: phonology, orthography, semantics, syntax, understanding of the alphabetic principle, and morphology, illustrated with images of the word's different meanings.

The POSSUM approach

Six components. One word. One lesson.

Take a Core Word like bat. In RAVE-O, that word is explored through its sounds, spelling patterns, many meanings (the animal, the baseball bat, to bat your eyes), grammatical roles, and word parts — all in one lesson. The more a student knows about a word, the faster and deeper it’s read.

The mind behind RAVE-O

A career spent understanding the reading brain.

Dr. Wolf is the author of Proust and the Squid and Reader, Come Home, and has spent decades studying how children learn to read. RAVE-O is the direct product of that research: a program built on the architecture of the reading brain.

“The reading brain is not built — it is borrowed, recycled, and repurposed from systems that evolved for other things.”

RAVE-O is an incredibly innovative intervention program. Through its comprehensive POSSuM approach, RAVE-O provides both effective and fun ways to build the wiring of the reading brain. RAVE-O’s emphasis on the meanings of words (and connections between words) extends vocabulary development in unique ways, enabling countless opportunities for creative expression and deep thinking from Day One of lessons. During my years of private practice teaching this imaginatively designed program was always my favorite to use, offering my students joyful and intellectually engaging learning experiences as they mastered essential reading/writing skills.
