Deep reading is the semi-miraculous apex of our species’ invention of writing that allows us, in Proust’s words, to go “beyond the wisdom of the author to discover our own.”

It is a beautiful collection of some of the most important components in human language, oral and written. Indeed it reflects how the one (oral) is embodied in the latter (written).

We skim, we word-spot, we browse, we skip over complexity, and we miss beauty (both meanings).
