The ‘S’ in POSSUM stands for Semantics — and it may be the most underestimated lever in reading intervention. When a child’s semantic network for a word is rich, retrieval is fast. When it’s thin, every encounter with that word feels like starting over.

RAVE-O builds semantic networks deliberately: every Core Word is explored across its multiple meanings, its synonyms, its family of associated ideas. Readers who can access a word’s meaning quickly free up cognitive resources for comprehension — the entire point of reading in the first place.
