Phonics gets a struggling reader in the door. It does not, on its own, get them to fluent, comprehending reading. Decades of intervention data show a consistent pattern: phonics-only instruction plateaus, often well below grade level.

The POSSUM approach treats phonics as one of five necessary components, not the whole story. Orthography, semantics, syntax, and morphology all contribute distinct, non-overlapping value — and skipping any of them leaves a predictable gap in the reading brain.
